I am surprised at the amount of "5 star" reviews this book has received. I love this author, don't get me wrong. I have read and enjoyed all of her books. The lead characters in this book, Joanna and Crockett, are completely likeable. (It's nice to see more of Crockett after his great debut in Short Straw Bride). The supporting characters are interesting, too...
But for me, this plot was LACKING. The whole time I was reading I felt like it wasn't "high stakes" enough. The drama wasn't very dramatic, there was little doubt or challenge that Joanna and Crockett would end up together (that is solidified about halfway through the book), and I just wasn't tearing through the pages to see what would happen next. This was a slow, plodding read that remained fairly light and stress-free. There was little room for growth in the pretty perfect Crockett and Joanna, so the transformation mostly occurs in Silas, Joanna's father. That was a unique aspect to the story, but it made the romance between Crockett and Joanna a little ho-hum.
