The review about this product

Do You Believe in Magic?: The Sense and Nonsense of Alternative Medicine (Hardcover) This was an extremely well written and researched book on choices confronting consumers in deciding on solutions to health issues. The author however seems to favor more FDA control over alternative medicine (Vitamins, herbs, etc.) feeling the public is often fleeced by buying untested or unproven products.

To be fair, he should have covered the negatives of FDA approval more such as the tendency to promote crony capitalism for the large drug companies and the Big Brother authoritarian power of deciding what choices consumers should have. Often lifesaving drugs are withheld from market due to risks that individuals might be willing to take. Other times dangerous drugs with dangerous side affects are approved that individuals take blindly due to FDA approval. There is risk in all products, food, drink, tobacco, transportation, energy, etc. Fact is consumers should be free to make their own choices as each individual's risk / reward and valuation preferences defer widely and there is not a set Yes or No for everyone. The FDA can easily publish research or make recommendations for those interested, but individual health care choices should best be left to individuals. It is a long slippery slope to leave individual choices up to Government control in the name of "regulation".
